2010 New York State Poverty Report

The New York State Community Action Association (NYSCAA) is pleased to present its third annual edition of the New York State Poverty Report. Providing a statewide look at poverty, this publication is designed to be a comprehensive resource for New York's Community Action Agencies, community-based organizations, policy makers, advocates, community coalitions and the general public. This report does not offer policy recommendations; rather, the intent is to serve as an informational source that adds value to the larger dialogue on how to address poverty in communities across our state.

New to this year's report are data highlighting the plight of the working poor and families headed by single women. Under the heading of Employment & Poverty, we have added the statistic "% of Poor who are Employed" and under Gender & Poverty, we include the statistic "Of All Families in Poverty, % Headed by Single Women with Children". Please be sure to review the definitions of each indicator in the Statistical Sources section at the back of this report.

PLEASE NOTE: While this publication includes the latest poverty data available through the US Census, 2006-2008 American Community Survey, the data does not yet reflect the current economic conditions facing New Yorkers.
