Community Action Poverty Simulation
Poverty Simulation at Clinton High School
NYSCAA recently hosted a Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) at Clinton High School in Clinton, NY, where more than 100 people took part.
Developed by the Missouri Community Action Network, CAPS asks participants to step into the roles of low-income families over four 15-minute “weeks,” working to cover food, shelter, and other basics while navigating community resources around the room. It's a hands-on way to see how interconnected the challenges of poverty really are, and to start a conversation about what can change in our own communities.

EAP Highlight
Helping 2.5 million New Yorkers save on energy bills
New York State has launched a major push to enroll 2.5 million New Yorkers in the Energy Affordability Program (EAP), which lowers electric and natural gas bills through monthly discounts applied directly to each bill.
|
Who Qualifies
Households with income below the Area Median Income (AMI) or State Median Income (SMI), depending on their utility. That includes families, seniors on fixed incomes, and people already enrolled in HEAP, SNAP, SSI, Medicaid, or TANF.
|
|
|
Why It Matters
Monthly savings free up household income for food, healthcare, and housing. Connecting residents to EAP helps prevent shutoffs and brings state resources into your local economy — and many eligible families still aren’t enrolled.
